PORTRAIT COMMISSIONS
Whenever possible I prefer painting from life, however not many people can afford the time to sit in a studio posing for hours on end. In most cases it is necessary to paint using photographic reference. Whenever possible these photos will be taken by myself in a variety of poses and lighting combinations.
PROCEDURE
Where possible, I prefers meeting with the client prior to the reference-photography session to discuss setting, mood, pose, background and dress.
I will photograph the subject with a digital camera in different positions and lighting conditions and download the images onto a computer for review. Together with the client, we will select an image that will serve as reference for the final portrait. Photos can also be taken in the subjects home/office or familiar surroundings.
An A3 colour print will be made indicating the intended composition and final dimensions. This will be shared with the client for approval. This allows the client to preview what the portrait will look like and creates an opportunity for the client to offer final comments before the painting process begins. There will be no surprises throughout the process.
While most portraits are done from photographs, I do encourage live sittings where possible. If only to create a loose sketch of the subject. This can be done at the time of the photo session and will take about one hour.
The portrait will then be completed. The subject is finally called to the studio for final touches and approval.
PHILOSOPHY
A portrait is unlike other types of painting. It is a partnership which must please both the artist as well as the client. Every endeavour is made towards this end.
FEES
Portrait fees begin at R4 000 (depending on the size) with a 50% deposit. The final image will be completed in my own impressionistic style as viewed on this web site. In the unlikely event that the client is unhappy with the end result the deposit is forfeited and no further obligations will be advanced by either party.
With care, oil portraits on cotton canvas will last many hundreds of years.

Portraits of deceased loved ones can also be undertaken as long as good photo reference is available.
